Catsは日本とNYで何度か見ていて、昔からの大ファンです。CDも何度も何度も聴いて、歌詞も覚えるように刷り込んでいました。
I have watched “Cats” in Tokyo and NY several times and have been a big fan of it. I have tried to construe and remember the lyrics of all the songs in the show.
そんなところ、Cats映画版がアメリカでは12月20日に公開されました。つい最近Frozen2を映画館で見たこともあり、あんまり映画館に足を運ぶ気がしなかったのだけど、ふと「ドライブインシアター」ならいいかもな！と思いサンノゼのWest Wind Capitol Drive-Inに愛車を走らせました。
Cats the movie was released on December 23rd in the States. Since just recently we watched Frozen 2 in a movie theater, I didn’t feel like going to one again. But the idea to go to a “drive-in theater” struck me and I drove to West Wind Capitol Drive-in in San Jose with my family.
ドライブイン・シアターというのは、大きなスクリーンにプロジェクターで映画を投影し、それを車の中から見る、音はFMラジオで聴く、という代物で古い技術の組み合わせで1940年代からあるらしい！ Netflix全盛時代にまだよくやってるなｗという感じですが、音質も悪くなく、なかなか日本では得られにくい体験でした。（車のバッテリーが上がりそうになったり、窓が曇りまくったり、後ろの席の子どもが窮屈な体勢になったり、とアナログな問題はいくつかありましたが）
In a drive-in theater, they project movies onto very large screens and you listen to sound through specific FM radio channels. This is a combination of old technologies and actually it has been in the US from the 1940s! I wondered how they have survived their business in such an era in which many people watch Netflix in their houses. But still, the quality of sound from FM radio and the digital picture projected on the screen was not bad at all – we all had quite an experience. (Although we had some “analog” issues like car battery level became very low while we were watching the movie, my daughter had to squeeze her body into front seats from the back)
親子３人で１８ドルくらいだし、安い！というのもあります。（ちなみにもう１本無料でホラー映画が見れたけど、夜遅くなるのでやめました ードライブインシアターは暗くなってから始まることもあり）
The cost was very reasonable, we paid for just $18ish for our family of three. (And we gave up to watch a second movie which is a horror one you can see high school girl getting killed by a serial killer… It would have ended before midnight – drive-in theater starts after sunset)
それはさておき、本題はCatsの方です。
Rotten TomatoesとかIMDbの評価ほど、全然悪くなかった。というか、Catsを心の底から愛していて、歌詞も覚えるほどに知り尽くした自分からすると、よく出来ていると感じました。
Anyway, what I wanted to write was about Cats.
Not as trashed in Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb etc., it wasn’t bad at all. As a big lover of musical Cats, I thought it was a pretty transformation to movie.
まず、批判として「劇場版と 違う」っていうのがあるでしょうが、劇場版でも日米で内容が相当に違うので、自分はそんなに気にならない。
全体的に、曲を中心とした構成で、追加ストーリー的な要素を抑えて、このスーパーロングラン作品の既鑑賞者を最大限意識しながら作っていることに、私は交換を感じた。
それでも映画版では「ストーリーを作るための余計な演出が入った」という向きはあるが、そもそも劇場版もこれでもかというくらい個々の猫の説明に時間をかける。
First of all, some are criticizing that it is different from the original Cats. But if you watch musical Cats in Japan and NY, they are moderately different. I don’t regard being different is not necessarily a bad thing.
Overall, the movie version is based on songs, like musical movies, and minimized adding story elements from the original script. The director was conscious enough to consider the existing audiences of the musical version. I thought it was a good balance.
それと、本質的にCatsは「それぞれの猫を紹介すること」「舞踏会」「選考会」である。
「選考」は一度見れば分かる話。
「舞踏会」部分は、物理的な制約が少ない映画版において、劇場版を上回っており、鳥肌が立った。
「それぞれの猫の紹介」もCGの活用や異なるセットを用いて豊かに表現されており、分かりやすい。
Essentially Cats is a story around “Introduction of each main cats”, “Ball dance” and “Selection of a cat”
“Selection” is an obvious part once you watch Cats and its process is almost same in the movie Cats.
“Ball dance” was even better in the movie with less physical restriction. Mind-blowing it was.
“Introduction of each Cat” was clearer in the movie with CD and respective set and scenes. (For instance, the railway cat)
それらを、主人公猫（映画版オリジナル）の視点を通して描いている。それぞれの猫を個別に紹介していく劇場版より、導線がはっきりした面がある。
And they are depicted around a main Cat (original in the movie). The story became more connected through the guide of her.
その他の部分で、誘拐だとか、劇場版オリジナルのプロットがあったが、それは枝葉の部分でしか無く、本質的な部分で映画というフォーマットの利点を十分に引き出した良作でした。
Yes, there were original plots (such as abduction) in the movie and some might not like them, however, they are minor parts of this well-designed story and I evaluate this is a good one utilizing the format of movie.
